European Commission’s Digital Omnibus Package

The European Commission has unveiled a new digital omnibus package that could streamline rules on AI, cybersecurity, data, and privacy.

Some of the proposed changes:

The applicability of rules for high-risk AI systems will begin only once the necessary support tools and standards are ready. This gives companies more certainty and time to prepare.

The cybersecurity reporting will be simplified. Companies currently report cyber incidents under several laws (e.g., NIS2, DORA, GDPR). This would be replaced with a single reporting portal, easing the burden and reducing duplicate work.

The GDPR will be updated by streamlining certain processes. The intention is also to make cookie preferences more user friendly.

Lastly, the digital omnibus package aims to simplify data rules and make them practical for consumers and businesses

The digital omnibus proposal now moves to the European Parliament and the Council for adoption. We will continue monitoring the legislative process and aim to publish a newsletter containing more detailed information of the changes, once the process moves forward.
